Book Review: Girls Like Me by Lola STVil

Have you ever felt like an outsider? Like you don’t fit in? That your crush will never notice you? That is what happens to Shay, the main character in Girls Like Me by Lola StVil. This realistic fiction book is written in the form of a collection of poems. Since it is written in poetry form, it makes this story a quick and entertaining read.
Shay is in high school and is dealing with being overweight and unpopular. She then begins to chat with a boy online and after she talks with him for a while, they instantly become friends and fall in love without knowing. Shay wants to keep this relationship a small thing, instead of it becoming a full out relationship. When Godot wants to meet in person and make their relationship real, instead of online, Shay is afraid that he may not like the way she looks.  She then turns to her best friends for help with this problem.
As you can see Shay is an insecure girl. Additional issues that Shay faces are with her stepmother. Her father dies abruptly and her actual mother left her when she was really young. Her step mom is trying to get her to eat healthy, so she thinks of her stepmother as the enemy. Even though Shay is fine with the way she looks, she is uncomfortable with the way she feels other people see her.
Other minor, but important characters are her friends. Boots and Dash both have completely problems of their own and add to the plot. Even though these friends go through tough times, they always come together to help one another.
