Teen Book Review by G4 (6th Grade)
This book, The Incredible true story of the making of the Eve of Destruction by Amy Brasher, is very well written.
It is about Laura Ratcliff, who is the narrator for the story.  Her small town in Arkansas, Griffin Flat, is going to have a movie staged there!
This story takes place in 1984, in Griffin Flat, Arkansas.  16-year-old Laura’s parents are divorced, and she has a stepbrother, Terrance. Her dad is in the “Strategic Air Command”, and calls at odd times to hint at a catastrophe. Her “friend”, Dana, is very invasive, and doesn’t like not getting her way.  Her other friend, Max, is very smart, but is crazy sometimes.  Laura, like many others, called in on a radio contest to try to get a part on the movie being staged in her town.  She wins, and picks a plus-one to go on the movie with her.
Laura was picked to be on a movie about nuclear war, which she has a bad fear of.  Her list of things she is afraid of is “People not liking me, getting sick, my parents dying, and nuclear war.”  But, it’s just a movie, right?
Her town is one of the largest risk factors for being nuked by the Russians.  FEMA has pamphlets being sent down to their area to tell people what to do during a nuclear war, and hotels do also.  Meanwhile, the movie keeps filming.
Teens would love this exciting thriller. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, because it is a very interesting and surprisingly funny book.
Who is Laura’s Plus-one?  What happens due to the movie?  Will Laura’s town get nuked?  Read this suspenseful, funny novel to find out!
